( she's not relieved, and it's not like her lungs feel a little less tight at the revelation the fiery vastayan is still in her old haunt, and relatively in one piece. however, she's certainly not unhappy to note that Xayah seems to have made it through the storm, and in fact, manages what looks suspiciously like a smile. nobody point it out, she's sensitive about anything that isn't smirking or glowering. )

Better get used to it, cutie, these are my kind of hours. ( vampires love skulking around in the dark, after all. perennial dark would be perfect, if it weren't for the whole this world is dying aspect.

Carmilla wanders closer to where Xayah is, eyeing the plants on her way. besides a bunch of colorful herbs, it seems the rest of the plants more or less made it out okay. she's kind of surprised.
) I was wondering how you were holding up. I see you and your plant friends are just fine.

( for her part, Carmilla is sure trying to avoid getting close enough to anyone that it would bother her if they weren't around. trying, and failing. Midge disappeared a long time ago, and she hasn't heard from Nancy since the storm hit. Masaomi is kicking around somewhere, but she's reluctant to even admit she likes him. Xayah is one of the few residents of Beacon that she isn't cagey about liking, so of course it's a relief to know she's still here.

even though the flip side of that means she's still here in this hellhole that tried to drown all of them in the past few weeks. but Carmilla is selfish enough to be glad she's still here.
)

Can't you? These things look like they're growing faster than ever. ( she doesn't know that much about plants, and even Carmilla can tell they look incredibly healthy. even despite the storm, or light. pretty impressive. she idly plays with a red leaf before abandoning it. ) Good. This place is full of dimwits, we can't afford to lose somebody like you.

( that was almost nice! too bad she had to dump on the rest of town to do it. )

( it is unavoidable, whether Carmilla will admit it or not. and worse yet, she's already done it and then some, which is also something she doesn't like to dwell on. she's hundreds of years old and knows how foolish it is to let herself care about things. and yet as much as she tries to avoid it, some people just stick. some manage to matter, even though she knows how dumb it is to let herself care for lives that are ultimately fleeting.

she tries not to. it just always ends up happening anyway.
)

Why do we have to contribute to this place we're trapped in? I don't care what that lantern lady says, it's her mess to clean up. Not mine. ( she's spent too much of her afterlife at the beck and call of someone else, so safe to say Carmilla is hard to inspire to be helpful. she's interested in herself and what serves her. not so much anyone else. ) But, this place is nice. I guess. If you have to pursue hobbies besides homicide.

( she shrugs. homicide is a perfectly reasonable hobby, in her opinion. )

Is that one of your feathers out front? The float-y, glow-y one? ( she nods behind her, out the door she'd entered through. a bit of an abrupt subject change, admittedly, but she's curious. )

( Carmilla means Solis, who she dislikes rather strongly... Robin is too much of an idiot teenage girl under the thumb of unfavorable circumstances to truly merit her ire. a grown ass woman causing a catastrophic disaster and then expecting everyone drawn in by the calamity to do her work for her? hard pass.

she shrugs.
) Fair enough. ( she respects that kind of loyalty... though Carmilla isn't likely to admit when she feels the same. she'd much rather find rampant excuses for doing things that could be helpful, if you squint. Xayah might notice that tendency sooner or later, as she's one of the few in Beacon Carmilla likes enough to put a little effort into.

the blade Xayah gave her is admittedly more pretty than the pale, golden feather. she tilts her head at it, before glancing back at Xayah.
) Usually the inexplicable around here is spirit related. What are the chances following it will kill us?

( she approaches to touch the feather, at least curious enough to see if it burns her or something else dramatic. instead it just dusts off into the dark. ) I guess I've got nothing better to do. ( see what I mean about making excuses about being helpful? that. right there. )
